It wasn’t too long ago when navy blues and charcoal grays were the only colors men wore at events.
Today, fashionable celebrities walk the Red Carpet in suits of all kinds of colors. We’ve seen Jake Gyllenhaal rock a deep green suit with a white shirt; Rami Malek in a bright red ensemble and a Nick Jonas in a sultry purple suit.
It’s a lot more acceptable for men to take risks and experiment with colors when it comes to suits. But while celebrities are willing to take risks to make a statement with their fashion sense, people at home usually still go the traditional route.
We’ve developed a guide for all those who would love to try a colored suit but don’t know where to start:
Pick Staple Colors
You may not want to make the jump to a bright red suit right away, so start slow. Buy suits in staple colors first. Go for neutral colors like beige, tan, navy, shades of gray, etc.
Once you have a few, you can think about color combinations you can create with the shirts you wear underneath your jacket.
Since staple colors are still fairly conservative, you can get a little creative with the shirts you wear with your suits. Look up color combinations online to see what works and what doesn’t.
Pick Colors Based On Seasons
Some colors just work better in the summers than they do in the summers. For example, if you’re going to a meeting on a hot summer day, you should probably steer clear of dark blues and grays because they do draw heat and go for beiges, pale blue, creams, etc. These colors work better in the cooler months.
Use Bold Colors Sparingly
You’ve heard the phrase “pop of color”, right? You don’t have to settle for a full-blown colored suit if you don’t want to, you can incorporate small quantities of bold colors to your ensemble instead.
Opt for a bright pocket square, a colored tie or an accessory to breathe life into an otherwise dull look.
